three What do I need to get a website up and running?

We understand that setting a website up for the first time can be confusing. However, there are basically three things that you need to get your website up and running:

  1. A domain name (i.e. yourcompanyname.co.uk). There are many companies that offer domain name registration. Please ask if you would like us to recommend a company or register a domain name on your behalf.
  2. The website itself. This will consist of a series of text and image files with extensions such as .html, .htm, .jpg, .gif, .js.
  3. A web host. You pay a host to house your website on a server that is constantly connected to the internet. You can choose to host your site with us or with another provider. Please see our services page for further details of the hosting we provide. A lot of web hosts also offer domain name registration.

We recommend that you keep your domain name registration separate from your web hosting, using different companies for the two, as this can make it easier to move your site to a new host if you ever find this desirable. For this reason we don't offer domain name registration ourselves, however we are very happy to offer advice on selecting and registering your domain.
